Ways You Can Help Our Environment
What can you do?
Ok, you've decided that perhaps there is something you can do to help save our planet. Not sure how to go about making the small changes that lead to big ones? Here's a few sites that tell you how to do just that!
Everyday Ways to Protect the Environment
There are things you can do each and every day to lesson your impact on the environment, starting right now. Here is a list of things you can start with that won't break a sweat (or your wallet.)
Reducing Solid Waste
Individual consumers can help alleviate America's mounting trash problem by making environmentally aware decisions about everyday things like shopping and caring for the lawn. Like the story that says that cats have nine lives, so do many of the items we use every day.

100 Ways to Save our Environment
100 ways to help save our environment. There are some great tips here, and even doing "some" of them will help! How about starting with a few and adding one every week? Before you know it, you'll really be doing your part to save our earth!
Protecting the Earth During the Holiday Season
The holidays can be a warm, magical time of year when we show our appreciation of each other through celebrations and gift-giving. Unfortunately it can also become a time of overconsumption, wastefulness and increased strain on the environment. But with a little innovation and commitment, this holiday season can become an opportunity to create new holiday traditions that help protect the environment not only for this holiday season, but for generations to come.

Paper or Plastic?
The next time you're asked the age old question "paper or plastic?" at the supermarket, say "neither"!
The biggest problem with plastic bags is that they do not readily break down in the environment, with estimates for the time it takes them to decompose ranging from 20 to 1000 years.
Given the costs and inconvenience associated with recycling, and the fact that reuse only delays the plastic entering the environment, the most sensible option is to cut down on the number of plastic bags that you use, or stop using them altogether.
From nationalgeographic.com:
Plastic bags are so cheap to produce, sturdy, plentiful, easy to carry and store that they have captured at least 80 percent of the grocery and convenience store market since they were introduced a quarter century ago, according to the Arlington, Virginia-based American Plastics Council.
As a result, the totes are everywhere. They sit balled up and stuffed into the one that hangs from the pantry door. They line bathroom trash bins. They carry clothes to the gym. They clutter landfills. They flap from trees. They float in the breeze. They clog roadside drains. They drift on the high seas. They fill sea turtle bellies.
Millions of the plastic bags end up as litter. Once in the environment, it takes months to hundreds of years for plastic bags to break down. As they decompose, tiny toxic bits seep into soils, lakes, rivers, and the oceans.
So, paper bags are better right?
Wrong! Neither is good, both are a drain on our environment!
It takes more than four times as much energy to manufacture a paper bag as it does to manufacture a plastic bag.
From reusablebags.com:
"Of course, most paper comes from tree pulp, so the impact of paper bag production on forests is enormous. In 1999, 14 million trees were cut to produce the 10 billion paper grocery bags used by Americans that year alone. Paper bag production delivers a global warming double-whammy forests (major absorbers of greenhouse gases) have to be cut down, and then the subsequent manufacturing of bags produces greenhouse gases."
Hopefully, people will begin to realize that paper and plastic bags both come at great cost to the environment and instead of stating which they prefer when asked, they'll proudly say "neither, I have my own!" and pull out their recyclable cloth tote bag.
So next time you go shopping, hold your head up proudly as you refuse a plastic or paper bag knowing you did something to help save the environment.
